The Ventura Film Festival began in 2004 and has presented countless films, usually over 200 films each summer, and has captured notice from the international cinematic community. From its beginning, the festival has grown into a significant cultural event that assembles movie directors, ecological activists, and attendees from around the world.

Distinguished events have encompassed presenting celebrated filmmaker Dylan O'Neil, the original world champion surfers Peter "PT" Townend together with Ian Cairns, quadruple world champion Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/MMA athlete martial arts icon Fabio Leopoldo, and the 50-year anniversary of West Side Story, which included hosting the entire award-winning cast of West Side Story, including Oscar recipient/Golden Globe winner George Chakiris and Golden Globe recipient/Oscar nominee Russ Tamblyn.
